Chocolate Chip Cookie Salvation Object Lesson

On Easter Sunday this year I decided I wanted to share the “Easter Story” in a new way. I knew that many of my kids would have already heard the story many times, and I had to make it fresh to keep their attention. I was inspired to do a cooking object lesson because I love a good excuse to make something in the kitchen. Kid’s ministry and cooking are my favorite talents/hobbies, so I instantly thought of chocolate chip cookies. It’s a food all kids love to eat, and it’s easy to make in bulk! I started googling chocolate chip cookie object lessons, and all I came up with was a gross cookie recipe that no kid would ever eat, so I decided to write my own. I created a lesson that relates each ingredient to a part of the Easter story and a Scripture. I used it for Easter Sunday, but it could easily be used any time of the year to teach the message of salvation to kids.

 

Before we get to the lesson, I want to share with you how I was able to use different verses from all over the Bible for each ingredient in the lesson. This could end up being very time-consuming and it’s easy to lose the attention of the majority of your kids if you’re not prepared. In the pictures below you will see how I marked my Bible so I could easily flip from one verse to the next. I put tabs on each of the pages, marked them with the number of the ingredient, and highlighted the verses I would be reading. This worked so seamlessly in practice, I would definitely recommend taking the extra time to prepare this since you will be flipping to nine different Scriptures.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

First, I invited a kid up to be my helper for the lesson. When I would introduce an ingredient, they would measure the ingredient out and mix it in the bowl.

Ingredient 1 – Flour

• When God created the 1st man and woman they were pure and clean like this flour, they were without sin. – Read: Genesis 2:15-17 “The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”‘

Ingredient 2 – Salt

• Unfortunately, Adam and Eve did eat from the tree and sin entered the world. The bitterness of salt is like our sins. Salt can look just like sugar just like sin can look like a good idea, but then you taste it and you know it’s not right.
• Read Romans 3:23 “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”

Ingredient 3 – Butter

• Butter is going to stand for Jesus, because who doesn’t love butter. Jesus came to earth, and while he was here he was perfect and completely without sin.
• Read 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”

Ingredient 4 – Eggs

• Eggs stand for life. Jesus, because he was without sin, gave his life to save all of us. Jesus did not die for his own sins, he died for ours.
• Read Isaiah 53:4 “Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins.”

Ingredient 5 – Vanilla

• (Have your helper smell it) After Jesus had given his life on the cross for all of us he was buried in a tomb. Vanilla stands for the perfumes and spices they used to preserve Jesus’ body before burial.
• Read John 19:38-40 “Afterward Joseph of Arimathea, who had been a secret disciple of Jesus (because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus’ body. When Pilate gave permission, Joseph came and took the body away. With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of perfumed ointment made from myrrh and aloes. Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped Jesus’ body with the spices in long sheets of linen cloth.”
• Do you guys think that’s the end of the story? Well, Jesus died right?

 

Ingredient 6 – Baking Soda

• Just like baking soda helps our cookies rise and become fluffy, Jesus rose again after just 3 days of being in the tomb.
• Read Romans 4:25 “He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.”

Ingredient 7 – Brown Sugar

• The darkness of the brown sugar is like the darkness in our hearts when we have sin in our lives.
• Read John 3:19 ” And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.”
• When we sin we live in the darkness. I would much rather live in the light.

Ingredient 8 – White Sugar

• When we ask Jesus to come into our lives and take away our sins, we become like this white sugar, clean and pure.
• Read Isaiah 1:18 “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.”

Ingredient 9 – Chocolate Chips

• The last and best ingredient yet! Chocolate chips stand for the sweetest part of our story. Because Jesus came to earth, died on the cross taking on our sins, and rose from the dead he gave us the opportunity to live forever with him in Heaven.
• Read 1 Thessalonians 4:17 “Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At the end of the lesson your cookie mixture will look like a mess. I used this as a teaching moment to wrap up the lesson. Here’s is how I finished my lesson:

• “Look at this cookie mixture. It looks like a mess! That’s what our lives are like without God, but he turns our lives into something great (pull out chocolate chip cookies).”
• At the end of service everyone will receive a chocolate chip cookie to remind them of what Jesus did for us.
• I gave a salvation call for all the kids who had never asked Jesus to come into their lives, and said a prayer with them. After the prayer I invited everyone to the front for prayer and worship to thank Jesus for what he did and celebrate his resurrection.
